Since Alan is blind, Alan and Ruth Anne belong to the National Federation of the Blind which is the largest organization of blind people in the United States. Both Alan and Ruth Anne believe that blindness is a mere nuisance, and that the blind individual, given the opportunity, and proper training, can compete in the world on an equal basis with his sighted peers.
As you saw on the front page, Alan is a recovering alcoholic. He is a firm believer in Alcoholics Anonymous because he knows it has worked for him.
