A modern nurse detective is British nurse Kate Kinsella, in the series by Christine Green. Kate opens an investigation agency (her late, rather dim boyfriend was a detective, so how hard can it be?), optimistically expecting to function as "a cross between Mata Hari and a young version of Miss Marple" (Deadly Errand).
Kate frequently feels a financial pinch and works part-time as a nurse to pay the bills when the snoop business isn't booming. She rents an office above a funeral parlor, and her landlord, undertaker and foot fetishist Hubert Humberstone, frequently helps in her investigations. Kate is thirty-ish and red-haired, single, and can often be found downing a pint at the local pub.
