cherry Jean Craig: Artist Turned Nurse

Jean Craig, Graduate Nurse
Five books
Author: Kay Lyttleton
Publisher: World Publishing
Dates: 1948-50

"I have to find it. Don't you see? It's the only way I can go to art school."
--From Cherry Ames,
Cruise Nurse
, p. 103

As her family deals with postwar stress, budding artist Jean Craig attends art school in New York City, but eventually turns to nursing in her hometown.

Jean Craig is the eldest of four children whose lives are severely disrupted by World War II and its aftermath in this postwar series.

Their father's continuing ill health and inability to work after he returns home from wartime service force the Craig family to move from their home in a comfortable Long Island suburb to a house in a remote area of Connecticut, where they will be able live more economically while he recovers.

Jean initially hopes to pursue an art career, and at one point returns to New York City to take an art course. But after abandoning her artistic plans and becoming engaged, she eventually turns to nursing and decides to attend the new local nursing school, thinking that her training will be good preparation for marriage.

Jean Craig Grows Up, 1948
After Jean's father returns from WWII in poor health, the Craig family, consisting of the mother, father, three daughters, and one son, moves to the country to cut expenses and facilitate Mr. Craig's recovery.
Jean Craig in New York, 1948
Restless in the country, Jean temporarily moves in with a cousin in New York while she takes a two-month art course, renewing her determination to study art.

Kay Lyttleton is the pseudonym of Mary Ann Amsbary.

Jean Craig Finds Romance, 1948
The focus is on Jean's younger sister Kit, who visits relatives in Wisconsin, helps her family through a financial crisis by opening a summer camp, and finds romance, while Jean decides that art is only a hobby for her and makes plans to marry.
Jean Craig, Nurse, 1949
When a small hospital opens in her hometown, Jean decides to train as a nurse because nursing knowledge will help her become a better wife and mother.
Jean Craig, Graduate Nurse, 1950
Jean's last days in nursing school are marked by hard work with polio and pneumonia cases, and the flowering of several romances among her friends and family as she plans her wedding.
