All these young women in uniform were thoroughly alive, even those tired from just coming off duty. All of them were eager and alert and purposeful, keyed for high action. Already Cherry felt she belonged.

R: Reamer to Regan
Reamer, M. R.
Miss Reamer is the Superintendent of Nurses at Spencer, a tall, middle-aged, businesslike woman with keen gray eyes. She welcomes the incoming students to Spencer and tells them the rules: no eating on the wards, no dates with interns, no jewelry. She also tells them that "nursing is the most rewarding of all professions for women. And frequently the most romantic and exciting" (Student Nurse, p. 32). She helps Cherry in her difficult relationship with the prickly Mildred Burnham. Miss Reamer frequently hosts teas for the class, and talks to the students about their future plans (Senior Nurse). Cherry visits Miss Reamer when she returns to Spencer Hospital (At Spencer), and works as her assistant to prepare for an upcoming position as night supervisor at Weatherly Hospital (Night Supervisor).
Reese, Tom
One of Cherry's few nondoctor beaux, Tom Reese is the assistant to the store manager at Thomas and Parke in New York City. A jazz fan, he looks "startlingly like her, vividly dark, lively, quick-moving--like more of a twin than Charlie." He helps Cherry capture the thieves who are stealing from the store (Department Store Nurse).
Regan, Tommy
Twelve-year-old paperboy Tommy Regan comes to the doctor's office for treatment of a severe gash on his knee. He tells Cherry and Harry Jenner that, while riding his bike on his paper route, he fell into a ditch after being forced off the road by a big dark red car--the same car that he's noticed rendezvousing with a New York City taxicab on the first of every month in a remote area. Could his accident be related to what he saw? (Country Doctor's Nurse).
