H: Hall to Hortas

Hall, Bucky
Bucky Hall is a friend of Charlie's who visits the Ameses when both men return from the service. Charming and flirtatious, he flatters Cherry outrageously, and she convinces herself that he's romantically interested in her. When he asks her advice about a present "for a very nice girl," she's sure the gift is for her--till he says the girl in question is golden-haired and "smaller than you" (Private Duty Nurse, p. 122); it's for his fiancee.

Harden, Sherman
Sherman Harden becomes Cherry's patient when he visits the Hilton Group Medical Practice Clinic and is diagnosed with diabetes. Sherman, who had been in Cherry's class at Hilton High School, is the city editor of the County News, a daily newspaper. Although his father is the owner and editor in chief of the paper, and the Hardens are among the wealthiest families in the county, Sherman owes his job to hard work, not nepotism. He is determined to investigate a counterfeiting ring, but is captured. Cherry bravely confronts the criminals to plead for medical help for him when he suffers from insulin reaction (Clinic Nurse). Midge Fortune later works for Sherman as a stringer (Rest Home Nurse).

Harrison, Alicia
A former classmate of Cherry's mother, Alicia Harrison is the headmistress of the Jamestown School for Girls. Tall, beautiful, and gracious, Mrs. Harrison is plagued by financial worries and concerned about Lisette's furtive snooping--and Cherry's (Boarding School Nurse).

Heller, Margaret
Mousy, neat, and colorless, with a knack for making hurtful remarks, self-important Margaret Heller is the head typist in the records office at Graham General Hospital. She's got quick hands--she can fix a broken typewriter or pick a lock in seconds. And she'll do just about anything to get a success-minded young doctor to like her (Veterans' Nurse).

Hendrix, Harry
When he comes to Cherry for treatment of an infected cut on his left hand, Cherry thinks he's just an unpleasant, rude man. But then she notices a revolver in his jacket pocket, and he threatens her. Later, that hand injury is his undoing, however, when it helps Cherry see through his attempt to impersonate Jacob Lenk (Ski Nurse Mystery).

Hillman, Mayor Cyrus
Cyrus Hillman has been the mayor of Sleepyside for twenty years. Almost everybody likes good old Cy, but he's hardly a poster boy for honesty in government. Worried about an election challenge from young upstart Harry Jenner--and facing the loss of free access to the taxpayers' money--Cy takes drastic actions. If only he could learn to drive more slowly! (Country Doctor's Nurse).

Hodges, Pete
Cherry meets Pete Hodges on a Bermuda beach, and is pleased to learn he's from Henderson, Illinois, near her hometown of Hilton, and played high school football against her brother, Charlie. He works for the U.S. consulate in Bermuda, and helps Cherry solve a mystery ("Bermuda Adventure").

Hope, Dr. Harry
Harry Hope is a junior psychiatrist on the staff of the University College of Medicine, near Hilton, where he lives with his young family, including two sons. He had been a resident at Hilton Hospital and returns to treat amnesia case Richard Albee, with Cherry's assistance (At Hilton Hospital).

Hortas, Margaret
Small, dark-haired, and shy, Maggie Hortas is a flight nurse with Cherry's Flight Three. From the San Joachim valley in California, she went to nursing school courtesy of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps and has nursed in army camps in the United States; her assignment to England is her first overseas duty (Flight Nurse).
