E: Eldredge to Evans
Eldredge, Frances
A white-haired dignified English woman living in a village north of London with her granddaughter, Mrs. Eldredge, a friend of Dr. Joseph Fortune whom Cherry tries to help, fears that her son-in-law, Mark Grainger, is a spy. "I have gone to the telephone and had strange voices address me in German. When I reply, they immediately hang up. I have heard Mark admitting people into my house in the dead of night. ... I am not imagining these things" (Flight Nurse, p. 62).
Endicott, Captain Paul
Paul Endicott is a "strikingly handsome and sleek young officer. He had regular features, clear gray eyes, wavy blond hair, and fine, well-kept hands. He undeniably had charm, and he knew it" (Army Nurse, p. 35). Vivian Warren falls for him, but Cherry thinks he's vain and selfish. After he makes trouble for Cherry, Vivian sees his true colors.
Evans, Ann
Cherry meets Ann Evans on her first day at Spencer Nursing School, when they share dinner in the hospital cafeteria. Ann is "a poised girl with smooth light brown hair and dark blue eyes"; "rather quiet and serious for a girl her age" (Student Nurse, pp. 25, 27). She is from Indian City, Illinois, near Cherry's hometown of Hilton, and had once met Cherry's twin brother, Charlie, at a party. She has a father who was maimed in World War I and two brothers. Ann is engaged to Jack Powell, whom she marries in a hastily arranged wedding in England, where they are both stationed while in the army (Flight Nurse).
