Davis, Dorothy
Cherry's Visiting Nurse supervisor, Dorothy Davis, is a marvel of efficiency, with twinkling brown eyes and a ready smile (Visiting Nurse). Through her brother, she later helps Cherry obtain the position of ship's nurse on the Julita (Cruise Nurse).
Deake, Sergeant Isaiah (Lovey)
Sergeant Deake is in charge of the nurses' basic training at Fort Herold. He finds them exasperating: "Did I ask to train my superior officers [the nurses are lieutenants]? Did I? Not in all my twenty years in the Army! And females I'm stuck with--females!" (Army Nurse, p. 52). Cherry angrily tells him, "Try to be civil, lovey!" (p. 53), and the nurses immediately begin calling him Sergeant Lovey. Vivian Warren snaps a photo of him in the midst of a tirade, and Cherry has sixty copies made. Each nurse tacks up a copy over her dresser in time for the rigid weekly inspection, much to his chagrin.
Demarest, Toby
Toby Demarest is a four-year-old boy who is dying because his body cannot absorb nourishment. His wealthy parents are neighbors and benefactors of the veterans' hospital where Cherry is assigned. Whenever she has free time, Cherry tells him fanciful fairy tales and legends, and he eagerly anticipates her visits (Veterans' Nurse).
Doake, Patty
Fifteen-year-old Patty Doake, who wants desperately to be a nurse, lost her mother when she was a baby, and her eccentric father died the previous year. Though he had told Patty he'd put aside a nest egg for her education, he apparently died penniless, leaving her only a lavish wardrobe, a worthless piece of desert property, and a cryptic note. Cherry helps her find and claim her inheritance (Dude Ranch Nurse).
Dodd, Dr. Alan
In the running for the post of head resident of Spencer's new children's wing, Dr. Alan Dodd is "easygoing and kindhearted" (At Spencer, p. 27)--and good-looking. He seems more interested in Cherry than in the head resident's job.
