The Story of Edith Cavell
Born: December 4, 1865,
Swardeston, England
Died: October 12, 1915,
Brussels, Belgium

"[I]f patriots were to defy their invaders openly, they would be shot ... So they have to resist the Germans secretly."
--From Cherry Ames,
Flight Nurse
, p. 189

Because of her efforts to help Allied soldiers escape from occupied Belgium during World War I, British nurse Edith Cavell was executed by a German firing squad.
