Caroline Rhodes is trying to rebuild her life after being hospitalized for depression following her husband's death--when she, a nurse, couldn't do anything to save him after an accident.
She's picked up and moved from Chicago to Rhineburg, Illinois, the town where her son, Martin, and daughter-in-law, Nikki, are living while Martin's finishing a doctorate in history at Bruck University and hoping to win a faculty post. Caroline's looking for peace and quiet, new friends, new interests. She finds a special friend--Carl Atwater, chairman of the history department--and a new pastime--ferreting out clues to some dastardly doings.

- Something Wicked in the Air, 1999
The university-sponsored Renaissance Faire should be an occasion for fun and frolic--not murder. But the controversy over a possible archaeological find leads to just that, and Caroline and her friend Carl follow the trail of a killer. [Available at Amazon.com]
- To Kill a King, 2000
Caroline leaves peaceful (but surprisingly murder-prone) little Rhineburg for a summer in the city, taking a temporary assignment in the emergency room of the Chicago hospital where she used to work. When another nurse--and good friend--is suspected of murder, Caroline once again investigates. [Available at Amazon.com]
