Grosset & Dunlap, 1962
"And do you know what Bud Johnson said to the Director of Volunteers?" grumpy, skinny Mrs. Jenkins demanded indignantly of Cherry ... "Bud said, 'Be reasonable, see it my way.' Humph! These junior volunteers!"
--From Cherry Ames, Staff Nurse, p. 62
Cherry helps set up a hospital volunteer program and investigates an investment scam.
Chapter 1: The Young Volunteers
Chapter 2: Off to a Good Start
Staff Nurse is the only book in the series that is closely tied to a story that appeared in one of the annuals: "The Pinafore Club," published two years earlier, details Cherry's involvement in setting up the Hilton Hospital summer junior volunteer program, which is in its second year in Staff Nurse. Cherry's romantic interest, Dr. Dan Blake, was introduced in that story.
Chapter 3: An Astonishing Scheme
Chapter 4: Fair Warning
Cherry also becomes involved in the world of shady investments in Night Supervisor.
Chapter 5: High-Pressure Salesman
Chapter 6: Cause for Alarm
Chapter 7: The Wizard
This was the first of five books to be published in only the green-spined pictorial cover format, and the first to have pictorial endpapers--showing Cherry pushing a young boy in a wheelchair.
