cherry Cherry Ames, Dude Ranch Nurse

Book 14 cover
Book 14, by Julie Tatham
Illustrated by ???
Grosset & Dunlap, 1953

"We haven't had a nurse stay at the ranch longer than a month since the season opened last fall. If you last two weeks I'll eat my boots, spurs and all."
--From Cherry Ames,
Dude Ranch Nurse
, p. 10

Cherry nurses asthmatics at a dude ranch and helps an impoverished teenage orphan, despite becoming the target of malicious pranks.
Chapter 1: Tucson, Arizona
Chapter 2: Patty's Problem

Although Cherry's old flame Wade Cooper lives in Tucson, Arizona (Veterans' Nurse), Cherry never attempts to see him during her sojourn in Tucson--something about which he complains in Country Doctor's Nurse.

Chapter 3: Unknown Enemies
Chapter 4: A Strange Letter
Chapter 5: First Day on Duty

Cherry always carries a small iron with her when she travels (p. 132).

Chapter 6: A Puzzling Conversation
Chapter 7: The Missing Key Ring
Chapter 8: More Trouble

The unusual structure in the Arizona desert where Cherry searches for clues to Patty's inheritance is named The Castle; in the Vicki Barr series, for which Julie Tatham also wrote several books, Vicki's family lives in an unusual house called The Castle--but it's in Illinois.

Chapter 9: The Mystery Castle
Chapter 10: An Unhappy Week
Chapter 11: Another Disappointment

Cherry wears a size 5A shoe (p. 93); her shoe size is also given in Mountaineer Nurse (p. 87).

Chapter 12: An Unpleasant Scene
Chapter 13: A Cruel Joke
Chapter 14: A Midnight Scare

Because of her troubles at the ranch, Cherry is compared to Calamity Jane; the real Calamity Jane, born Martha Jane Canary in 1852, was a legendary and colorful American frontierswoman in the Dakota Territory. Calamity Jane toured in Wild West shows with Wild Bill Hickock and claimed to have been a scout for General Custer; she died in 1903. Read Buffalo Bill's remarks about her.

Chapter 15: Cowboy Festival
Chapter 16: Cherry Recognizes Her Enemy
Chapter 17: An Unexpected Reunion

This was the first book to show a picture of Cherry with a black band on her nurse's cap on the dust jacket spine.

Chapter 18: Cherry Makes Up Her Mind
Chapter 19: Hidden Treasure
Chapter 20: "Hasta la Vista"
