Cherry helps establish a junior volunteer program for teenagers at Hilton Hospital and guides Midge through a summer romance in "The Pinafore Club."
Cherry visits Bertha in Minnesota--it's a whirlwind visit, literally, as a tornado suddenly sweeps through town in "The Big Wind."
"The Pinafore Club," by Helen Wells, a Cherry Ames story
When her young friend Midge Fortune and other teenagers need something to keep them busy and useful during their vacation from high school, Cherry is instrumental in setting up a summer junior volunteer program at Hilton Hospital, despite some opposition. Cherry also guides madcap Midge through some romantic complications--and enjoys a new romance herself with young Dr. Dan Blake.
This story is an apparent precursor to Staff Nurse (written in 1962), in which the Hilton Hospital summer junior volunteer program is in its second year and Dr. Dan is still a romantic interest. This is the only instance in which a book builds on one of the stories in an annual.

"The Big Wind," by Helen Wells, a Cherry Ames story
On her way home to Greenwich Village from a case in Los Angeles, Cherry stops over in Minnesota to visit Bertha Larsen and meet her parents and brothers on their farm. But even a simple visit turns into an adventure for Cherry when a tornado hits, and she helps searchers find some missing children.
When Cherry visits the Larsens, it's the only time we get to meet the family of one of Cherry's friends. Though Bertha has an older sister, May (Book of First Aid and Home Nursing, p. 101), she isn't mentioned here.
