1959 annual cover
Various authors
Illustrated by Walt Howarth
World Distributors, 1959

Cherry's new private duty case has her on the location shoot of a Hollywood Western in "Ghost Town Mystery."

Cherry fills in for Gwen as a Visiting Nurse and helps bring two long-lost lovers together again in "Christmas in New York."
"Ghost Town Mystery," by Helen Wells, a Cherry Ames story
Cherry's latest private duty assignment, caring for movie mogul John Blaine, a diabetic who needs a daily injection of insulin, lands her in glamorous Hollywood, and then smack-dab in the middle of a mystery. On a location shoot in an eerie Western ghost town where Blaine is filming a major motion picture for Mammoth Studios, Cherry sets up a first aid station to take care of minor injuries. But a series of strange occurrences, ranging from petty theft to sabotage, plague the filmmakers and threaten the production until Cherry cleverly uncovers the secret hidden in the deserted town.

John Blaine is only one of Cherry's celebrity patients; others include concert pianist Scott Owens historical novelist Martha Logan; young ballet dancer Leslie Crewe; foreign correspondent Matthew Jeffrey; and stage actress Meg Morrow.

"Surprise for Penny," by Catherine Morris
After her successes in high school theatrical productions, Penny dreams of an acting career--but her big chance for an audition leads her to a new path.
"The Mannequin Mystery," by Sylvia Edwards, a Sally Baxter story
The "girl reporter" for the Evening Cry enters the highly competitive world of high fashion when she plays "nursemaid" to a new young model, but trouble arises when her notebook is found to contain not only notes for a story but sketches of secret fashion designs.
"Good for Nothing," by Mary Wall
Maud Cole of the Minkly Girls Club helps a hapless newcomer finally find something she can do well.

In the cover illustration (one of several showing a blue-eyed Cherry), Cherry is inexplicably holding a Readers' Digest Condensed Book, though its contents are indistinguishable. Among the books visible in the bookcase is The Wind in the Willows.

"Nursing 100 Years Ago"
Excerpts about slovenly nurse Sairey Gamp, from Charles Dickens's Martin Chuzzlewit, illustrate the sorry state of nursing in the days before Florence Nightingale.
"Nursing To-day," by Kay Burgoyne
An account of the steps a girl follows to become a nurse shows how nursing has progressed to become an honorable profession.
"Christmas in New York," by Helen Wells, a Cherry Ames story
Cherry returns to her old job as a Visiting Nurse in New York City--this time filling in temporarily for Gwen Jones, who's broken her ankle. Cherry pitches in as the Spencer Club nurses prepare for a gala Christmas party at the neighborhood settlement house (here called Linden House; in Visiting Nurse, it was Laurel House), and takes over Gwen's district, where she meets elderly Henry Cole. Stirred by the story of his long-ago romance with a young singer, Cherry helps him recover three special portraits--and reunite with his long-lost sweetheart on Christmas Day.

Cherry had similarly filled in for Bertha when she was hobbling on crutches in Mountaineer Nurse.

"The Legend of Li Chee," retold by W. Royden-Smith
Li Chee wishes to marry the man she loves, not the one chosen for her; her story explains why Chinese brides eat lychees to ensure a happy marriage.
"Emergency!"
Everyone should be prepared to give first aid in everyday accidents and simple "emergencies."
"Summer Post," by Agnes Booth
Alison is so anxious to be hired as a secretary-companion that she takes the wrong advice, and learns a lesson about beauty.
